I borrowed this book from my Mam (my sister-in-law bought it for her a couple of years ago) and was looking forward to reading it as it has received so many good reviews and is a bestseller.
The actual real life story that the book is based on is incredible and inspiring and of course we should continue to tell such stories in the hope that we will never see and experience such evil again.
However I really struggled with the writing style of this book. I know that it was written as a Young Adult book, and also that originally it was written as a screenplay. The author did interview Lale and decided to write the book as a novel not a memoir but to me I felt like it didn't like a fiction book but also wasn't factual enough to be a memoir. It felt to me like it sat somewhere between the two and that was why I didn't like the writing. I think it need to be either a non-fiction account or a fiction based on the real life story.
I know so many people have given this excellent reviews but for me I just found it an average read.
