What a treasure of a book! I approached this with some trepidation, i’m An animal lover and anything remotely traumatic involving animals generally upsets me, but i needn’t have feared. This book is far from sad, in fact I would not recommend you read this in a public place, it is laugh out loud funny!

Jonathan Cranston wanted to be a vet from such an early age and he refused to let a series of setbacks get in his way. His determination and love of animals shines through on every page.

The book is set out in chapters, with each chapter being dedicated to a particular animal and his experience with it. My particular favourite was the swan, where he had to grab an injured swan in front of a group of local people. His descriptions of his internal panic and the community setting make for an hilarious read.

Bill Bryson is the king of comedic travel writing and Jonathan Cranston sits by his side as the king of animal antics.

An unexpected find, a book I’ll be recommending to all my friends.
