We’re back in the rural West Country of England again with the sequel to The Last Hours. The village of Devilish and it’s inhabitants are still in remarkable good health, because of the protection of the moat and the strict rules enforced by their leader Lady Anne. The necessity of finding provisions have meant a small band of villagers led by the tough and single minded Thaddeus Thurkell have left the safety of the village. The fears of the remaining population of the county, decimated by the Black Death, make their task ever difficult. Returning to Devilish they come under attack from other less enlightened forces. Needless to say they survive, but the whole book keeps the reader involved in the suspicious fears of a devastated country. The story also provides a wonderful insight in the roles of women in the 14th century and how little their views and actions are ignored by society, but how common sense can come across in the end. This is a great book though I would encourage readers to start with the first book as they really do go together
