Fantastic historical novel!
I've never read any of the many novels written by Minette Walters - I definitely intend to delve into more of her books now!
This novel is the second one in a series about the people of the Develish demesne (the first one being The Last Hours). I wish that I'd read the first book in the series, however The Turn of Midnight was great to read as a standalone and easy to follow as such.
The Develish characters are wonderful - I found myself willing them all on in their fight for survival after pestilence had wiped out large swathes of the population. Lady Anne & Thurkell are wonderfully strong, compassionate and intelligent characters who have led the Develish people to survival.
The book depicts a period of history that I wasn't familiar with and Walters' descriptive narrative brings the period vividly to life.
Highly recommended!
