I haven't read the prequel to this book so thought I would find this difficult to get into but in fact it was a great read. The respect Lady Anne gets from her serfs and the people of Develish at the time of the black death is astonishing considering women were seen as second class citizens with no power in society.
Thaddeus and the boys head off on a journey to neighbouring demenses to find out if anyone has survived the black death and to retrieve Eleanor's dowry. But of course all doesn't go to plan and before long they need help from Lady Anne. The relationship between Anne and Thaddeus is one of mutual respect, friendship and love.
For a book set so far back in time the writing style is very easy to understand and is truly enjoyable.
