Satisfying conclusion

I found this to be a really satisfying conclusion to the events begun in The Last Hours. This tells the continuing story of the people of Devilish and their bid to avoid the Black Death by cutting themselves off from their surrounding demesnes. Some of the characters arcs are really well conceived and feel authentic, with believable motivations and actions. Others, the daughter in particular, feel a little bit extreme and I found myself questioning the honesty of her rapid transformation. That being said, I thought the pacing of this second book was much better, the plot and narrative moving quickly as a lot of the set up had already been achieved in the first book. Walters writes beautiful prose and her turn of phrase does not disappoint here. All in all, I thought this was a great finish to an enjoyable series and I hope that Walters writes some more historical fiction as she clearly seems to have a gift for it.
