The second book in the Last Hours series jumps straight into the action due to an interesting technique of summarising the characterisation and role of each character from the previous installment during an introduction, rather than repetitive story-telling as in many sequels. When starting this book I felt as if I was reading the introduction to a play script and was ready for the drama to begin. This theatricality was something that seemed prevalent throughout, not only in the opening. I was not disappointed as the story was well written with good character development and an excellent narrative flow which kept me reading.

Set against a back-drop of the Black Death, this novel presents a survival story revealing the nature of people and what they are willing to do in the fight to stay alive.

This microcosm of a previously feudal society creates a new, more equal political system, unusual for the time period in which it is set.
