Robert Peston is probably best known as the ex BBC and now current ITV journalist who seems to always be on our TV screens however with The Whistleblower he has written his first thriller which not surprisingly has a political theme.

Set in the run up to the 1997 the book features Gil Peck who despite his drink and drug issues is a highly respected journalist who has an excellent little black book of contacts.

Peck is then hit with a personal trauma with the death of his sister in a hit and run but not everything is what it first seems.

With the author’s background and the story as outlined I had high hopes for this book, however, the storytelling felt clunky and the twists in the story were very predictable and easily foreseen. Overall the book felt “bang average” with an excellent opportunity missed.

The story did move at a decent pace so may well appeal to some readers more than it did me
