Although the first novel in this series ‘The Cruel Prince’ was an incredibly well written story, ‘The Wicked King’ surpassed my expectations by a long shot. This sequel follows from the events of the first book and we can now see the change in the power dynamic between Jude and Cardans relationship.
Jude’s character’s strengths develop and her control over the political world of fae place her centre stage. My admiration of her character roots from her lack of ‘snowflake syndrome’ she is not supposed to be in control and yet she defies every expectation and takes power for herself.
Cardan in this novel surprised me the most as I think he knows more than he lets on. I am really hoping for a chapter from his point of view in the next and final book.
I can firmly say that Holly Black is a genius, even though that ending made me want to simultaneously crawl into a hole and scream into the void. Regardless I cannot wait for the next novel as I am completely certain that it will equally as brilliant as this masterpiece.
