Well-worth the wait

So I had been waiting for this book since winning my copy of the first book in the series, the Cruel Prince last year. The Wicked King was well-worth the wait. The story continued from soon where it had been left with Carden as the new King but held to an oath by Jude to do as she said for a year and a day.

I love the way Holly Black describes characters - there are enough physical descriptors to have a good image in your head of their appearances while their actions, their ways of speaking and so on reveal their personality traits. It makes you feel like you know the characters as well as if they were your friends.

The storyline is fairly fast-paced, with multiple different crisis moments from the very extreme like the potential start of a war or a duel, to the more minor embarassing moments. It has elements of everything - love, trust, treachery, deceit, kindness, cruelty and betrayal. These aspects come out with each twist and turn of the plot which leave you questioning alongside Jude who she can trust and who she cannot.

It is a fantastic story which unfortunately was left on such a cliffhanger that I am very much looking forward to 2020 and the final story in the series.
