In Winter 1903 a young seventeen year old girl is stumbling along the Pilgrims Way on the North Downs . The snowfall is heavy . She is freezing cold and stumbling along in her worn and cracked boots . A ministers wife gives her a wool cape and food and drink . In the morning the girl has gone . Continuing on her journey she is found in a poor way and taken to the nearest dwelling . This is the farmhouse where the Mason family live . They discover that the girl is heavily pregnant and give her a home .Kathleen is happy to join them but her past remains a mystery to them . Mrs Mason has seen the scars on the girls back and knows she has received a beating ar some point , but why ? What is so important that she cannot confide in her new family ?
