I loved the short prologue which is set in St Abb’s Head in Scotland and being able to think about what Thea and Denise are running from in their normal lives that made them embark on a road trip together. Denise already feels more alive, and it seems clear they have learnt so much about each other and supported each other to grow and feel revitalised in just a few days.

In chapter one we get to learn a little more about Denise and all of the things she is worried about both in her work life and in respect of her sons, her father-in-law and her mother. It’s the middle of the night and her husband Simon is laying beside her, oblivious. Denise readily admits to herself that she is lucky and really has nothing to complain about, so doesn’t really know why she feels so off kilter.

In chapter two we meet Thea as she’s returned home to her apartment after a first date. The first she’s had in a very long time which appears to have gone really well. Her teenage daughter Ella is staying with her father again, who Thea is divorced from. I liked the descriptions of Thea’s apartment which she’s lived in for 5 years now, and am intrigued about the hidden flaws referred to as she is dissecting/reliving her date from that evening. The end of that chapter also describes a scar on Thea’s stomach and how it is a marker of how close to death she once came.

I am already so excited by the opening chapters and cannot wait to keep reading about these two brilliant women!
