The story is based on two sisters and their family for four days during the raids in Belfast in 1941.
Emma and Audrey's lives and work are so different to each other. Emma volunteers for the night shift at the First Aid post three or four times a week against her mothers wishes. She feels she has to contribute to the war effort and this is ideal as she has spent years as a junior member of the St John Ambulance Brigade.
Philip their father is a doctor and is called to go to the hospital while the raids are on going. As you read through the story you feel the impact and horror of what both Emma and Philip see.
Audrey works in a tax office and is courting Richard an only child and a doctor. Their engagement and preparation of a quick wedding due to the war was well written and the reader knew that the relationship was doomed.
I loved the way each character was written and the antics of their brother Paul was wonderful.
A great book to read and highlights the horrors of what everyone went through.
