Lucy Caldwell is not an author I have come across before but I liked her writing style. The book follows a family, but more specifically two sisters who are living in Belfast when the bombing of their city and the docks starts in April 1941. Up till that point they had escaped the heavy bombing that other places had endured. Audrey the oldest gets engaged to Richard who is a doctor like her father and Emma is volunteering at a First aid post. As the air raids start the family all shelter in the cupboard under the stairs . Father Philip is called to the hospital and Mother and younger brother Paul stay home. It follows the next few days that change their lives and the city forever. Emma falls in love with Sylvia another woman at the first aid post and starts to explore her feelings. The book lets you feel what they were experiencing and how they all pulled together. I enjoyed the book and will look out for others by her.
