I’m in two minds about this book

I love historical fiction and was excited to read about World War Two in Belfast as I know nothing about the war as experienced in Belfast.

The book is set on the premise of 2 sisters and yet this is not entirely true. We also learn a lot about their mother as well as snippets of another family which don’t quite seem to fit in with the overall story.

The writing is good, although the lack of speech marks is annoying, and the imagery really puts you on the moment and shows the horror of the Blitz.

I didn’t feel that drawn to any of the characters and yet I enjoyed the exploration of what it means to be a woman at this time. The limitations of women’s options and the hope that things will change.

I felt the relationships for the two sisters needed more exploration, especially Emma. There was no resolution and yet no real exploration of how Emma would cope with this…

In some ways a lot happens within this book and there are a lot of good themes. And yet something felt lacking…maybe we didn’t share the lives of the character for long enough?
