This is a historical novel about a family living under the threat of destruction whilst maintaining their own solicitude to each other.

These are unprecedented times for all living during war, this story captures this and is set in the 1940s. We meet a family who for their safety hide under the stairs during the frequent air raids. Father, is a doctor and he is summoned to help out throughout the conflict. The two sisters are Emma and Audrey, and along with their brother they have to wait out for safety.

The book does capture the destruction of the bombings and also the restraints of women’s roles. The writing does not use speech marks which can sometimes make it hard to follow and I did find that I was not particularly drawn to the characters fully. I liked the genre and felt the scene was well set but I wasn’t totally immersed throughout the story.
