Where to start? This is an excellent read, from start to finish. The writing is brilliant, it is so easy to get immersed in the storyline and get involved with all of the characters - I almost didn’t want to make dinner and instead carry on with the book.

I’ve never read a book about the Belfast blitz before, and if I’m being honest, I hadn’t really put too much thought into other countries that had been affected in this way, so this was excellent story - painting a very vivid picture of the time. This book is gritty, the emotions are raw, and the characters are likeable and interesting. The scene setting is very realistic feeling and makes it all easy to imagine, which helps bring you into the story and care about the people in the story. At times it reads like poetry.

My only issue with this book was the lack of quotation marks to signify if a character was speaking out loud, or thinking. It wasn’t a dealbreaker.
