I found this an incredibly moving tale of two sisters Audrey and Emma set during the second world war. I knew nothing about the utterly devastating Blitz in Belfast where the city was desimated and suffered so much loss of life. The story is set around a period of a few days at the start of the Blitz and it highlights how lifes can be completely changed forever in the blink of an eye. Audrey is courting a young doctor, working to help the war effort and her life seems to be set in a traditional direction. Both sisters are intelligent and easy to warm to, the war has enabled them to experience working, having a sense of independence and widening their social spheres. I really liked both characters and sympathised with them so much over the course of the book.

I really enjoyed the historical detail in the novel, it was clearly well reasearched but written in an accessible way for the reader. It left me wanting to know more about Belfast. A really good novel, although it is small it really packs an emotional punch.
