I really enjoyed this, always read these kind of books as the wartime era fascinated me since school.
The story follows two young girls during the war years in Belfast and the time of the "Belfast blitz."
Emma is rather a free spirit and embarks on an affair with Sylvia which in those days would most certainly be frowned upon.
The other, Audrey is engaged to be married to Richard yet she is wrestling with her conscience as she isn't in love with him.
The chaos in their personal lives is mirrored in the background of the time they are living.
Both girls are soul searching and trying to find a sense of identity and belonging during a very turbulent period.
But with the shadow of war hanging over everything can the sisters ever find a measure of peace and happiness?
A thoroughly enjoyable glimpse into the lives of ordinary women struggling to survive against extraordinary odds when their world is changing around them.
A sensitive and intimate look at the behind the scenes day to day existence of living during a turbulent period of history.
Just wish it hadn't been so short as I felt the characters and their situations could have been expanded on a little.
But a really good read.
