The protagonist in this story is an archivist who happens upon a set of documents relating to someone who supposedly died alone with no one to care for or grieve them.

I loved this book - it kept me captive right until the very end with a combination of mystery, intrigue and romance. I particularly enjoyed the discussion and analysis of politics in Italy, art history and anthropology as well as how the history and politics of generations past was interweaved with the modern plot. It was cleverly done and I also enjoyed the plentiful references to plants and big gardens. I was really drawn in and became invested in the characters. The storytelling was good and I was surprised by the ending - I couldn't work out how the plot was going to unravel!

I also appreciated that there was no dramatic murder or violence, it was a gentle read perfect for the summer. I felt like I was basking in the warm Italian sun!
