I started this book knowing it spanned the generations, in my ignorance imagining it was the present day and ancient times. What a pleasant surprise to discover we were dipping in and out of the 1970`s.
Plenty of history, politics and current affairs interwoven with an excellent story, stitching it all together. The characters are well drawn, with huge attention to detail, which ensured I was completely invested by a few Chapters in. The research was thorough and the situations believable. I could imagine being in Rome, the sights, sounds and smells so well imparted.
Both Nina and Lottie had their demons and it was interesting to read how they both dealt with them.
The story is shrouded in an air of mystery, which I feel depicts Rome very well. There is an underlying mistrust of any figure in authority, whether political or religious that I felt was true to life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
