This is my first book by Chris Whitaker, but it certainly won't be the last. I can't wait to read his back catalogue. This was a slow burn and it took me a little time to get into the story and the writing style. On reflection, this was my fault - reading in small chunks is not the way to get the best from this book or to enjoy it at its best.
The plot was slightly over-complicated but I enjoyed the gradual unravelling. The beautiful prose, often missed in crime novels and masterful characterisation are what takes this book to a new level. Walk and Duchess are two characters who will stay with me for a long time. I defy anyone to read this and come out of it without at least a little Duchess-shaped hole in their hearts. Highly recommended.
