This book took far too long to get into. The language is pretentious on the verge of irritating and nonsensical. For some reason Whitaker has decided that various connecting adjectives and adverbs are totally unnecessary. Just makes it so difficult to read, as you're constantly trying to work out exactly what he means.

But once you get past that, the story itself is... OK. The characters are on the whole believable, although bland and unrelatable.

This is however, excepting Duchess. The 13 year old protagonist, whose life has, quite frankly, but horrific. She is the only reason I finished this book, as I was desperate for a happy ending for her. I needed to know if she survived.

A book worth reading if you can get past the irksome language, but I won't be running out to read Whitakers other novels.
