I could make this just a two word review and say utterly brilliant. But instead I’m going to tell you why I loved this book. Now I grew up reading King (he really doesn’t need his full name we all know who I’m on about) and I didn’t think anyone could capture small town America and it’s inhabitants quite like him. Well that was until I read this.

I was right there in the fictional town of Cape Haven with that hell of an opening of everyone out searching for seven year old Sissy alongside Chief Walk as he discovers a small shoe and then her.

This isn’t just crime fiction, this is a masterclass on capturing characters. We have the formidable Duchess Day Radley who has given herself the persona of outlaw. Taking on the sole responsibility of her younger brother Robin as her mother Star is a mess. Doing all she can to protect him her actions lead to consequences that gave a real turn in the plot. For a thirteen year old girl her voice was so strong, captivating and hard to read at times as a mother. The children in this book are starved of love from the adults and deprived of the basic safety and childhood that parents should provide.

I was emotionally invested as the story sucked me in to the heartbreak of broken people and wrung out to dry when I saw how far people will go for those they love. All they are willing to do and sacrifice in this tale of murder, revenge and ultimately redemption. I am not going to go into plot details too much but just know it’s spectacular and will leave you guessing right to the end when it all seamlessly weaves together.

This is a book where the writing is so good and full of integrity you will get lost in it. At a time when we have nowhere to go, do yourself a favour and visit Cape Haven.
