It has taken me a long time to finish reading Wink by Rob Harrell but that is my fault and not the author! I have dipped in and out of Wink over the last few months as for me personally, it wasn't a book that I wished to devour in one setting.

Then suddenly I was in the right frame of mind and began reading until the end. Wink is about Ross who wants to be normal and fit in with his classmates but is then diagnosed with a rare eye cancer and trying to fit in becomes impossible. The book is based on the author's own experience of how he coped when he was diagnosed at the age of 37, but seen through a child's viewpoint and how they cope with cancer, school and loss. Even though right at the beginning you know that Ross will lose his sight in his "bad eye" the story is not a sad one. It's more about overcoming adversity and dealing with whatever life throws at you and finding friends in unexpected places. It's the realisation from Ross himself that he doesn't need to fit in, he is brave and strong enough just to be himself. A very good read and a great book!
