Really enjoyable read
I really enjoyed this book. In Wink we follow Ross, a 7th grader as he battles going through school whilst receiving treatment for a rare case of eye cancer.
This was a really interesting read as we rarely see cancer through a child's perspective. It was a different take on this all encompassing illness which drew me in and made me empathise with the character instantly.
I also loved the cartoon illustrations scattered throughout the book. It helped to make the book more readable for younger readers, and also easier for younger readers to digest such a difficult topic.
I enjoyed that, whilst cancer was the main theme throughout the book, it wasn't the only theme. This book also dealt with bullying, the loss of a parent and changing friendships. Because of these different themes the book was a lot more complex and fleshed out than it could have been which I appreciated.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and it would be a good one for younger readers to read if they are in a similar situation.
