This book tells the story of three German women who lived through Nazi Germany, the war and post-war - but who had three very different experiences. The women's story talks about sacrifices and consequences of the war, and the bravery of those involved in it. The intricacy and intimacy in which the reader gets to know the characters make this book a must read.

Marianne, a powerful widow of the man who led the resistance, was a character I felt particularly attracted to. Shattuck described her as an independent, fierce, caring mother who protected her children - but who was also involved in ethical and moral movements relating to the war. If you like stories of powerful, activist women this is the book to read!
