New perspective
This book opened my eyes to a whole new perspective on WWII and the suffering of a people I had never considered. It's so important that we remember the lessons of the past, to remember the complexities of Hitler's rise, and not reduce it to the battle of good vs. evil.
You fall in love with each of the women, understand their motivations and sympathise with some of the awful choices they had to make.
Not only do the characters draw you in, but the structure keeps you hooked, telling the story of each woman in flash backs and flash forwards.
The author herself said that she was telling these stories because she recognised such women weren't asking for forgiveness, but wanted to be understood; and she achieves this perfectly.
