I was really excited to see the return of DS Nathan Cody after first meeting him in 'A Tapping at My Door' and this time, in the fourth book in the series by David Jackson, it gets even creepier! This book begins with a brutal, sinister and original crime scene; Cody is soon tasked with working out the enigmatic messages and find the culprit. Cody is also battling with past events (this is where reading the series has strong advantages) of an horrific kidnapping and torture on a previous undercover job - this is still haunting him and is becoming increasingly real and dangerous. If you have a fear of clowns - beware!

Sara is the new character and the bereaved wife of the victim whose strong personality has her being very proactive in the case; she's a likeable character and it's intense reading when some violent people are uncovered.
It's great to see Cody and his personal story; we get a lot more focus on the events that traumatised him and their development - not going to say anything else to avoid spoilers.

It's overall a dark, disturbing, brutal, creepy and engrossing crime read.
