This thriller exudes similar vibes to JP Delaney’s The Girl Before, all whilst making us question our ever-growing obsessive relationship with technology. The book starts off by slowly introducing us to the characters and making us aware of past events leading up to this point in their lives. Straight away I felt compassion and sympathy towards Nikki, far more-so than Ethan, though I can’t explain why. Perhaps the author’s intention? The book then begins to flit between perspectives of different characters generating an air of mystery and slowly building a sense of tension between the intertwining stories. Whilst it does take a while to build up to the climax of the story, it is certainly worth it for the huge twist, testing characters’ strength and capability as well as introducing a much more gruesome edge to the story. Overall I enjoyed the book despite the slow build-up and the punch-in-the-gut ending is what made me give it a 4-star rating.
