What begins as a book about the powerlessness of a woman being sexually harassed by her more powerful boss soon becomes more complex as Sarah wrestles with the moral and other dilemmas of her situation.
The moral dilemmas are amplified when she intervenes in a situation to protect a young girl and the girl’s father offers her a deal – give him the name of one person within 72 hours and that person will disappear forever. The fallout of this offer and her response to it and the consequences of this make up the majority of the book as the pace and the threats to Sarah pick up.
The consequences of sexual harassment not only to Sarah but to past and current employees of her department are also discussed as is the old boy’s network and the effect that coming up against this can have on a career and the health of sexual harassment victims. The powerlessness of the victims of sexual harassment is described in depth as is the increasing feelings of helplessness and finally despair leading to thoughts of revenge against the tormentor.
All of this leads to a well- researched and taut thriller with the reader not knowing how things are going to resolve themselves until the final chapters.
