A brilliant read, cleverly constructed and packed with twists, 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard is a skilfully written crime thriller, set in Ireland at the start of the pandemic as the country enters lockdown for the first time.

Ciara and Oliver meet when shopping for lunch. After a shaky start they begin dating, but both of them are hiding secrets. The coronavirus lockdown plays a large part in the story, as it compels them together at the same time as separating them from any scrutiny from family and friends. No one even knows they are dating.

A claustrophobic and intense read, told across three key timelines and from three perspectives, Ciara, Oliver and the police investigation.

I loved the way the story develops as a dizzying series of concentric circles, focusing on each part from different perspectives and then stepping back to expand and add more detail before throwing us off course again.

Highly recommended.
