This isn’t my usual genre and it’s the first Anton Du Beke book I’ve read but I found it a very relaxing read and not at all difficult to follow despite being unfamiliar with the characters and background. It has plenty of stories weaving through it featuring the staff of The Buckingham Hotel and although there is a clear love of the ballroom amongst it the stories happen both on and off the dance floor, a love of Strictly isn’t a prerequisite for enjoying this! It features a very interesting time in our history when WWII is on the horizon but no one knows for sure if war will come and it’s very much life as normal in the glamorous hotel on the surface at least. The characters are warm-hearted and I like the life it shows away from the hotel which is far more at heel but with genuine characters and issues true to the era. The book covers many months during 1938 so is not a conventional Christmas book although it culminates during the festive time but this does mean it’s a great read whatever the time of year.
