Now, I haven't read the other books in this series but I didn't find it too hard to understand the story. I love how it starts off right in the middle of an event and introduces us to the main character in a daily part of their life. I've never thought about what 18th century Cornwall might've been like or how the people would act, how customs, culture and tradition would have differed from today. This was a real eye opener from what I've read so far.
The writing style of this book is really emotive. I found myself feeling the pain of the main character and empathising with her which is also due to great characterisation. I applaud the author! I don't often find this in historical fiction so I'm pleased.
