Recently I have been trying to read a wider range of romance stories, including historical, and A Cornish Betrothal was the perfect one to start with! I was drawn to this book by the cover, with muted colours depicting something a little different to the usual historical romance covers with jewel coloured flowing dresses. The story focuses on Amelia, who believed her betrothed, Edmund, was dead and had since fallen in love with Luke. However, her life and relationships are changed when Edmund returns. This is the first book I have read by Nicola Pryce and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The story is set during the Napoleonic Wars and the narrative of this book instantly transports you to Cornwall in this time period. I loved reading about the historical elements, such as botanical drawings and herbal remedies, alongside the occupations of Edmund and Luke, making it a lot more interesting and layered than usual romantic novels. I would have liked a little more description for the Cornish countryside to really set the scene, which I feel may be more helpful for people who aren’t familiar with Cornwall, such as non-UK readers. However, this didn’t affect the narrative for me and is merely something that would have added a little more.

At first I felt it was a little slow to start, but once it picked up I couldn’t put it down. The depth to the characters was just enough, although I possibly would have liked more, but then this may detract from the narrative a little. I enjoyed the fact this book was not only a romance, but dabbled in a few extra genres, making the story interesting and gripping, with a couple of twists I didn’t necessarily expect.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading a Cornish Betrothal and since finishing the book, I have discovered this is part of a series, so I will definitely be picking up the other books, as well as a few more historical romances! Thanks for Readers First, Corvus and Nicola Pryce for providing me with an arc copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review!
