Reading the first look of A Cornish Betrothal by Nicola Pryce piqued my interest, so I was therefore pleased to receive a free copy. A Cornish Betrothal is set in Cornwall in 1798. Amelia Carew is in love with Edmund Melville, who is in the Royal Navy as a midshipman, an officer of the lowest rank. Edmund is declared missing whilst at sea, assumed dead. Eighteen months later Amelia has fallen in love with the local doctor, Luke Bohenna. However, on her birthday Amelia receives a letter from Edmund, who is alive and on his way home. Amelia is shocked as she now loves Luke with all her heart. Edmund returns a changed man however and Amelia decides to help him recover, whilst at the same time ending her relationship with Luke. However, as time goes on Amelia begins to doubt what really happened to Edmund and who she can trust. I do not normally read books such as this, however I enjoyed the story and it kept me gripped to the end. The only thing I did not like was the title A Cornish Betrothal, which does not sound very exciting.
