Although I liked this book, and I really wanted to, I think I was slightly disappointed and I do not know why. I did not find this an easy read, as I had to keep going back to check facts and details. It was only after finishing that I discovered that it was one of a series when I went to add it to my Goodreads account. So obviously it can be read as a stand alone but would be better if read as part of the series.
The story itself I found hard to get into, the first third was a bit long winded, however once it actually got moving it became more interesting. The author writes very descriptively about Cornwall, the clothing etc and the period. For example the code of the time, young ladies needing escorts etc, however there are some things that don't quite add up such as the fact that she has to ask to visit friends and neighbours but has obviously been allowed to roam free as a teenager with young men!
