I was hesitant to try this book as it setting in 1970’s East Germany is completely alien to me. However, I soon found I was struggling to put the book down and I was delighted to realise I can now go back and read the first two books of this series. The book manages to avoid the cliche of East Germany being a cold, heartless, backwards and evil place and instead paints a picture of a very normal world with darker forces lurking- and always watching- in the shadows.
The story is fast paced and has many twists which I didn’t see coming, the biggest of which take place in a parallel storyline which seems to lead into the next story in the series - a book I already can’t wait to read! I also found that despite having not read the first two books in this series I was able to follow and enjoy the story without problems. The book only lightly calls back to previous events and usually explains them for any new readers to make sure they aren’t lost!
