I read this book without reading the author's previous books in the series - Stasi Child & Stasi Wolf. Whilst it was a really good read and enjoyable as a standalone, I think I'd have benefitted from reading the earlier novels to build up a clearer knowledge of the characters involved - there are several references to incidents that happened in the other books and, as a reader, I was left wondering about what had happened.

This book is fast paced and describes the difficulty a mother feels in trying to balance bringing up her young family whilst undertaking a promotion in the East German People's Police. Without giving the storyline away, I can see that the author undertook a lot of research to write a fictional book based on medical experiments that really did take place.

I'll definitely read the earlier books now!
