If you enjoyed the Leo Demidov series 'Child 44', you will likely enjoy this too. The story is dark and twisted, and its horrible to think that such things could really happen in the real world. Karin doesn't know who to trust; her partner, her boss and even her boyfriend all seem to have dark secrets. Combine this with a shadowy government agency who watching her every move, and you start to wonder why anyone would ever try to fight back.

A Darker State is a political thriller set in East Germany during the later 1970s. I found the story a little difficult to follow, in part because of the use of German names for people and places which I find tricky to remember. However, I was ultimately satisfied with the conclusion. The individual case which forms the focus of the narrative is resolved, however the ongoing story of Karin Muller is left open. I would certainly consider reading the next book in the series. I am not usually fond of female lead detectives as they are often stereotypical and overplayed, however I don't feel Muller falls into this category. I would be interested to learn more about her life.
