Felt like a history lesson as well as a crime drama
We'll....I didn't dislike the book but I felt that it was a bit too centred on educating me about the situation in Germany before the Berlin Wall came down.
The story itself was brilliant. Down to earth characters, a number of poignant issues underlying the plot- homosexuality, motherhood difficulties, trust in relationships, political correctness etc.
I was gripped reading it, and the twists and unexpected turns made it unputdownable.
I found however, that there were a lot of German words and terms I was unsure of which I googled, but then realised as I finished the book were in a glossary at the back! 😂 a heads up would have been good!
I wouldn't seek out his other books, mainly because I found I really had to concentrate to know who was 'speaking' in the story, and which viewpoint was which, as well as feeling I needed a background knowledge on the history of Germany in the 1970s.
All in all a good read, but maybe aimed more at people with a significant interest in history.
