So after reading the first two books in the series 'Stasi Child' & 'Stasi Wolf' I embarked upon the journey of requesting 'A Darker State' from my local library. The initial excitement of picking up the book didnt end there, from when starting this next installment in the Karin Muller series, we are trhrown right in to the action from the get go.

Karin, fresh from having her twin babies, near the end of 'Stasi Wolf' is called upon earlier than expected to end her maternity leave for an urgent case which involves the body of a teenage boy is found weighted down in a lake. Reluctant to leave her maternity leave, Muller is promoted to Major (2 promotions up from her previous position) and offered a new apartment for her Grandmother, boyfriend and her twin babies to live in as part of her new promotion.

Skeptical as to what the Stasi has in mind for her with such a big promotion, she cannot resist the offer as it is a promising start for her twins in settling down.

Karin is back on the job with the mercurial Werner Tilsner who also has been promoted to Hauptmann. These two bounce off each other so well, which I feel makes the series enjoyable. Karin & Werner trust each other wholeheartedly and will do anything to get to truth of a case and to hell with the consequences from fellow Stasi officers or the Kripo.

Karin & Werner investigate the body of young teenage body who has been found in a lake with strange injection marks on his body and with a mysterious tattoo that may open up to new leads.

I wont say much more, as you really should be diving in to this series as it opens up the mind historically and catches your attention from the get go.

Roll on Stasi 77 now :D
