This is the third in the series of books set in Stasi controlled East Germany in the 1970s and featuring feisty murder detective, Karin Muller.
Karin has been enticed back from maternity leave by promotion to 2 grades higher and a new apartment in order to head a new team with state wide responsibility. However, the job inevitably leads to interference by Stasi officers at higher levels and conflict in her domestic life because of the demands of the job. Like the 2 previous books, A Darker State has been well researched and manages to convey the fear and uncertainty of living in the GDR at this time as well as the propaganda being spread by both sides.
I look forward to reading many more books about Major Karin Muller - the fourth is due to be published in 2019.
