From having a job as a top lawyer, Selma Falck can not sink much lower, having lost everything to her addiction to gambling.

Now she no longer has any of the precious things in her life - her husband, her children and her career. and is reduced to moving to an unsavoury apartment, with a cat for company.

When the cat drops a half dead mouse at her feet she feels she can sink no lower as she is violently sick just as her doorbell rings.

Standing at her door is Jan Morell who she considers is responsible for her present situation and he offers her a proposition. One last gamble.

His daughter, Norway’s elite skier, has been accused of taking performance enhancing drugs and he thinks that with Selma’s help he can get this accusation overturned and Selma will have the chance to reclaim her own life as she helps him to clear his daughter.

This is a book which catches the reader’s interest from the first page and introduces characters who we will learn more about, the deeper in to the book we get. Who is being kept prisoner in a cell, who is the down and out and who is skier Hege Morell?

As Selma delves deeper into the world of skiing she encounters scandals and death and her own life seems to be at risk.

I really enjoyed Ann Holt’s writing and this is a book I didn’t want to put down. I was quite surprised to learn that she was the former Minister of Justice in Norway, not really the sort of person you would expect to write such a page turner but I'm so glad she did.
