I was initially sceptical that the premise of this thriller may not be for me. Set in the world of winter sports I thought this may not hold my attention, but that was not the case.

I found Selma, the would be detective, disgraced lawyer, flawed but likeable. Her situation when we meet her is desperate but her humour remains. I also felt Helge, the perhaps victim of doping accusations, incredibly relatable. Even her attempts to rid herself of a banned substance planted in her belongings is written with tension and understanding of her predicament.

The sinister scene with an unnamed victim I found unnerving and if the novel has much of this, it may be too much for me.

It’s refreshing to read something from a culture different to one’s own.
