Set in WW1, the dialogue runs smoothly, the burnt lustre of this time bristling through a sharp narrative. Although 30 pages barely introduced the characters, they showed confidence and grit. A young woman with cold austerity beyond her years. A war torn shell shocked man with the echo of a glint in his eye. Although this is a page turner, each paragraph does end a bit short, not quite giving enough bait to truly hook the reader. The atmosphere of the scenes gives depth to the plot. Alas there are some predictable story lines, the confident, attractive and intelligent woman and man, why are there no ugly people in these stories? Is only beauty rewarded in the past world? I Would like to read more of this book but I fear that the characters may plumb shallow depths. This combined with stalled page turning could lead to this book gathering dust rather than a firm readership.
