A perfect read for the spooky shenanigans of October, A House of Ghosts is part paranormal, part mystery, part military investigation and part historical fiction. It's quite a fun and quick read, plus the beautiful cover (and really lovely internal map and chapter headers) make it a delightful one for the shelf.

At an old house off the Devonshire coast, a party is being held - one of ghostly aspirations. A rich couple hope to speak to their sons, who have unfortunately died in the war, but the British government also hope to find out who leaked weaponry plans to the Germans.

The book follows a few narrators, which I felt was one of its downfalls; if it had followed just the two main leads, it may have worked better, though I admit that the variety of voices gave the reader a wider version of the story. I also felt the multiple narratives detracted from the characterisation of the leads.

The other smaller issue I had was that of the writing style; whilst at most points normal, there were times I felt it was slightly clunky, hindering my enjoyment. But other than this, it was a fun and intriguing read that kept me flipping through the pages consistently.

TL;DR: An enjoyable "light" spooky read and a standalone to boot, making it perfect for the Halloween month.
