Set around 100 years ago, in an England shrouded by war and mist, and with every family having a ghost or two lost on the fields in Europe; this book is a thoughtful, atmospheric supernatural tale.

I enjoyed the two main characters, Kate and Donovan, who are an interesting pair; sent to Blackwater Abbet to investigate possible espionage whilst a spiritualist gathering is held. As with any good mystery, especially one set in the early 1900s, there are family secrets interwoven with the plot, possibly shady visitors, and this book also has a slight romance. The final chapters can be read both as a neat ending, or as a set up for another book with Kate and Donovan, which I would be most amenable to.

Atmospheric, well paced, and with a soft chill throughout, I found this a book well worth reading.
