On seeing and holding this book for the first time I must say I loved the front cover. The fact that although it's a hardback but it has no dust cover and had the most impressive gold embossing I thought was lovely. I thought the story was a bit slow to get started but once I was a bit into it I was hooked.
It's set in the latter years of world war 1 and it did remind me of an Agatha Christie book. Set on an island just off the Devon coast a group of people are invited to attend a spiritualist gathering at Blackwater Abbey, where Lord Highmount is trying to contact his two sons who have been killed in the fighting in France. Just as in any ghost story the weather turns bad and very soon a snow storm is raging on the island, communications are lost and we are left with dead and wounded people and spirits aplenty. Two main people in the story Donovan and Kate are interesting characters and maybe the author has plans to bring them into future books.
This book would make great Halloween or Christmas ghost story reading or anytime snuggled up in front of an open fire to keep those ghostly chills away!
