This book has a bit of everything: old haunted house on an island that can get cut off from the mainland and is then inaccessible, especially in stormy weather; war in the background - First World War in this instance - arms deals, dodgy materials, injured and dead men and women; a murder mystery, ghosts and a wonderful cover to the book.
You're not quite sure at the beginning what exactly is the focus of the book - the murders, the war, the ghosts, spying, children killed in the War. Lots of themes going on at the same time. They come together nicely though, with satisfying and credible conclusions.
The two main characters seem to be set up for a follow up or maybe even a series - they were well written and entertaining.
